Main opposition party, Akel, announced on Saturday their candidates for the European parliamentary elections to be held in May and have included Turkish Cypriot academic Niyazi Kizilyurek on their ballot.
The candidates from the Akel party are as follows: Giorgos Georgiou (MP), Chrysanthos Georgiou (the head of the Cyprus National Addictions Authority), Niyazi Kizilyurek (professor at the department of Turkish Studies at the University of Cyprus), Girogos Koukoumas (lawyer), Marina Nicolaou (political scientist, and member of the secretariat of the European Left) and Neoclis Sylikiotis (EU MP).
The official presentation of the Akel candidates is set to take place on January 26 at the Hilton Park hotel In Nicosia.
In a statement, party spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou said that according to the law the 72,000 Turkish Cypriots that have a Cypriot ID will have to come to the Republic to vote.
The Diko break-away party Dimikratiki Parataksi (Democratic Front) headed by former Diko leader Marios Garoyian will also be taking part in the European elections the party said on Saturday.
The elections are set to start on May 23 and finish on the 26.
