Tourist Arrivals in Greece Break 20-million ‘Barrier,’ Boosting Revenue by 10.6%

Tourist arrivals in Greece jumped 21.9% to top the 20 million “barrier” in January-October 2014, boosting travel industry revenue by 10.6% compared to the same period in 2013, Bank of Greece (BoG) reported on Tuesday. Total travel revenue for the period amounted to 13,013 million euros, according to BoG figures.
The revenue increase was largely due to a rise in arrivals, since average spending per trip was down 9.0%. Net revenue from travel services contributed to net revenue by 61.4% from services and offset a 73.1% trade deficit.
Tourism revenue from Eurozone residents reached 5,229 million euros, up 10.4% over the previous year, while revenue from EU28 countries was up 23.7%. Revenue from Germany was down 3.1%, falling to 1,807 million euros, while revenue from France was up by 27.7% at 1,140 million euros. Revenue from the United Kingdom reached 1,567 million euros, up 18.4%.
Among non-EU countries, revenue from Russia was down 13.2% at 1,154 million euros, while revenue from the United States increased by 11% to 604 million euros.
The largest increase in arrivals was from Germany (8.8%) and France (27.4%), followed by the UK (12.9%).
Arrivals from Russia fell by 8.1% and arrivals from the U.S. increased by 29.2% to 562,000.
