A musical look ahead :
Eller Van Burren
By Maria Gregoriou
Carols fade away with the close of Christmas Day so it makes sense to embrace Boxing Day with the volume turned way up high and a thumping music beat.
Enter the Armada Music Festival taking place on Boxing Day at the Pavilion hall in Nicosia. Entertaining it will certainly be, but the event has also been organised to help the work of the non-profit organisation Hope For Children UNCRC Policy Centre, who do their best to protect children’s rights.
Guitarist Eller van Burren from Holland will be headlining the festival. Burren is truly a master of many musical genres from heavy rock, to blues and jazz to pop.
Lest you think that Burren is missing trance music in her repertoire, fret not. The festival has an array of trance DJs including, Ruben De Ronde, who likes to place himself smack bang between trace and house music, Russian DJ Alexander Popov, who leans more towards electronic dance music, and French DJ Alexandre Bergheau, who will be mixing it all up with some trance, progressive and electro musical vibes.
As this could very easily turn out to be a sold-out event you should probably get your tickets beforehand at the kiosk at the Mall of Cyprus and the Oktagono Kiosk in Nicosia, Musical Paradise store in Limassol, Amalfi Café in Larnaca, the kiosk at the Kings Avenue Mall in Paphos, and from the Acapella Music Store in Ayia Napa.
Moving onto next Sunday, December 28, in Larnaca, the band Die Witzelsuchts will be celebrating the release of their latest CD The New Manifesto with a live performance together with the Pink Floyd tribute band Pigs on the Wing.
Die Witzelsuchts is a four member band from America and Cyprus who come together to fuse their multi-genre influences. So expect something a bit jazzy, rocky, with a hint of punk, and, of course, Another Brick in the Wall.
Leaving 2014 behind we head straight into 2015, on New Year’s Day when Diachroniki Music Stage in Nicosia will be hosting a night of disco and 80s music.
The stage alone should make the first night of the year one to remember as plenty of glitter is planned. So get the year started right with disco specialist DJ Mike Wildcut who returns to the music stage after playing for years in London’s Roller Skate Discos and Members-Only 80’s Clubs. With the king of the 80s DJ on the decks expect to move your feet and dance your way into 2015 with some Hot Stuff, Funky Town, Relax and almost any other classic you can remember from the boom-box era.
